2006 International Math and Science Olympiad

The Philippine Team came home with great mark of distinction after garnering the top awards in the recently concluded International Mathematics and Science Olympiad (IMSO) held on November 12-18, 2006 in Jakarta, Indonesia. This international competition was participated in by 65 math contestants from 12 countries namely Brunei, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, Nigeria, India, Thailand, and the Philippines.
Among those members of the Philippine team were talented and gifted kids of the Mathematics Trainers’ Guild (MTG), Philippines who garnered the major awards. An MTG kid Arvin Wilson Alba of San Beda College- Alabang participated in the Science Olympiad won gold medal while MTG kids Kenneth Tan Co of Xavier School and Henry Jefferson Morco of Chiang Kai Shek College bagged the silver awards. Three MTG kids Seanne Daphne Ng of St. Jude Catholic School, Brendon Mathew Go of Xavier School and Isaiah Paolo Lee of Mother Goose Integrated School got the bronze awards.
Meanwhile, based on the overall performance, Kenneth Tan Co who was just point half point away from the cut-off score for gold medal award was also awarded a trophy for Best in Exploration Mathematics. Such prestigious award was the first ever garnered by the Philippines since it has participated in the said contest 3 years now. Moreover, Henry Morco’s clear and elegant solutions earned praises not only from the members of the board of juries but also from the tutors/coaches of other countries.
The Olympiads were meant to develop primary school students' talent, interest, intellectual ability and skills in Science and Mathematics. The event organized by the Ministry of Education, Republic of Indonesia centered on the theme, "Smart, Skilled and Creative in a Joyful Competition for Excellence", involved the participation of Primary students with ages less than 12 years old.
Throughout the competition, each participant sat for grueling contest components, namely "Theoretical and Experiment for Science / Exploration for mathematics".
The winners with the other member of the Philippine teams were Mikaela Uy of St. Jude Catholic School who was just two points away from the bronze medal award and three other Department of Education representatives. Mrs. Rechilda Villame, MTG’s Vice President, headed the Philippine team. She was with the ever supportive MTG parents Margarette Go and Felicidad Tan Co and other MTG parents. Dr. Simon L. Chua congratulates and commends the remarkable performance of these brilliant kids. He also extends his gratitude to the parents who remain very supportive to the programs of the MTG.
