MTG Kids Did Well in 2006 ARML

Philippine Team A ranked 6th in the Las Vegas Site of the recently concluded American Regions Math League (ARML) held in the University of Las Vegas, Nevada, USA last June 2-3, 2006. The Colorado team topped the contest, followed by the 4 teams of Taiwan.
There were 3 sites of the ARML contest: Iowa, Pensylvania and Las Vegas. A total of 89 teams participated. Each team consisted of fifteen members. Overall, Philippine Team A ranked 15th.
The contest consists of 4 parts, namely: Power Round, Team Round, Relay Rounds and Individual Round. The first two rounds was a written contest with the 15-member team working as a group. One hour was allotted for the Power round and 20 minutes for the team round.
The team was further subdivided in groups of 3 for the two relay rounds. In the Individual round, each team member worked independently. Both relay and individual rounds took place in the auditorium with spectators around. The team’s standing was based from the total score of the 15-member team in all the 4 rounds.
Contributing to the Team A’s good performance are the following: from Ateneo High School - Alvin Belleza, Miguel Isidro Carino, Emmanuel Christopher Plan and Augustine Elmar Tejada; from Philippine Science High School, Main - Chiara Rosario Lanuza, Ramon Inigo Marfil, Stephanie Anne Oliveros and Virgil Garcia. The other team members are Minerva Avecilla (San Beda College, Alabang), Angeline Baniqued(St Paul College, Pasig), Percival Bueser (Manila Science High School), Davin Choi (Chiang Kai Shek College), Renard Chua (St Stephens High School), Jeremy Chua Yap(Jubilee Christian Academy) and Claudia So (Philippine Cultural High School, Main).
In the Individual Category, 6 out of the 30 delegates were awarded ARML medals for being top scorers. They are: Alvin Belleza (Ateneo da Manila University), Geraldine Baniqued (St. Paul College, Pasig), Ian Dimaandal, Ramon Inigo Marfil, Tobit Narciso and Stephanie Anne Oliveros (Philippine Science High School, Main).

On the other hand, Philippine Team B ranked 15th in the Las Vegas site. The team members are Geraldine Baniqued and Mariel Dee(St. Paul College, Pasig); Ian Dimaandal, Tobit Narciso, Jomo-Vitto Simbul and Adrian Tolentino, (Philippine Science High School, Main); Johanna Bandoy and Luzelle Kate Aba (Silliman University, Dumaguete City); Aileen Chua (Grace Christian High School); Jillian Kristell Sy (Chiang Kai Shek College); Dominique Rustia (PAREF Woodrose); Napoleon Pempena (St Andrews School); Daryl Carillo (Tabaco National High School, Legazpi City); Kim Araya (Ateneo de Naga); Jed Uytiepo (Don Bosco Technical School, and Victorias, Negros Occidental).
The ARML delegation was headed by Prof. Rechilda P. Villame, MTG Vice president with Roberto J Degolacion, MTG Office Director and Ms. Rosanne Salve, Dumaguete CityMTG Coordinator as team leaders. A number of parents joined the team and provided valuable support.
MTG or Mathematics Trainers’ Guild, Phil. trains and prepares students for international mathematics competition. This is headed by the first Filipino international recipient of the Paul Erdos Award, Dr. Simon L. Chua.
